Coupled-cluster theory and the CCSD(T) gold standard
An exponential wavefunction ansatz that is size-extensive and systematically improvable; CCSD(T) is the reference method for single-reference main-group thermochemistry and noncovalent interactions.
CCSD(T) energies benchmark and train density functionals, semi-empirical methods and machine-learned potentials wherever experiment is scarce.
A way to include electron correlation systematically; CCSD(T) is the accuracy benchmark for ordinary molecules.
- 1Start from a one-determinant picture
- 2Add single, double, triple excitations
- 3Exponential keeps parts independent
- 4CCSD(T): accurate, steep cost

The ansatz. Coupled-cluster (CC) theory writes the wavefunction as , where is a single reference determinant (usually Hartree–Fock) and creates single, double, ... excitations. In words: the exponential makes sure that independent excitations in far-apart parts of a system multiply, so the method is size-extensive; the energy of two separated molecules is the sum of their energies.

What it is
Coupled-cluster (CC) theory writes the wavefunction as with generating single, double, triple... excitations out of a reference determinant . The amplitudes are fixed by projecting the Schrödinger equation, not by minimising the energy, so the method is non-variational but (energy scales correctly with the number of non-interacting fragments), which is why it beats truncated configuration interaction for molecules.

- CCSD(T)
- A coupled-cluster method nicknamed the gold standard of quantum chemistry for ordinary molecules; accurate but costs grow steeply with size.
- electron correlation
- The way electrons dodge each other because they repel; leaving this out of a calculation is the main source of error in simple methods.
- chemical accuracy
- An error of about 1 kcal/mol (4 kJ/mol), roughly what is needed to predict reaction outcomes reliably.
- basis set
- The set of simple mathematical building blocks used to write an electron's orbital; bigger sets are more accurate and costlier.
- Slater determinant
- A standard way to write a many-electron wavefunction that obeys the Pauli exclusion principle.
- strong correlation
- A situation where many electron arrangements matter at once, so simple one-configuration pictures fail.
- dispersion
- A weak, always-present attraction between molecules from momentary electron fluctuations, which holds layers of graphite together.
- kcal/mol
- A unit of energy per mole of molecules; 1 kcal/mol changes a reaction rate by about a factor of five at room temperature.
