Unconditional Ω(log k) depth lower bound for k-hop induction heads in narrow transformers
Difficulty 66: the conditional answer has been known since 2024, but unconditional lower bounds for transformers stop at constant depth, and the wide regime is blocked by the MPC/circuit barrier; the narrow regime is a sharp thesis target with no technique yet. Placed below perfect matching in NC (74) and above planted clique (64). Application value 30: it would ground depth and chain-of-thought trade-offs in long-context models, but not change systems directly, so it ranks well below the retired broad subquadratic-attention entry (74). Leverage 34: it organises the expressivity theory of transformers and ties it to MPC lower bounds, a modest literature.
The problem
How many layers must a small transformer have to follow a chain of k references? No proof yet.
- 1Task: follow k chained look-ups
- 2Doubling jumps need about log k layers
- 3Is there a shallower trick?
- 4Proof known only given a conjecture
- 5Open: prove it for narrow transformers
The task. For a sequence of length define as the position right after the most recent earlier occurrence of the symbol (or if none). Iterate this times to get , and let . The task asks a causally masked transformer with layers, heads per layer, embedding dimension and bits of numerical precision to output at every position. For this is the classic behaviour seen in trained language models: copy what followed the last time this token appeared.

State of the art
Upper bound and conditional lower bound. Sanford, Hsu and Telgarsky (arXiv:2402.09268, ICML 2024) show that a constant number of attention layers can simulate, and be simulated by, a constant number of MPC rounds; they solve with , , (Theorem 4.2), and prove for conditional on the one-versus-two-cycles conjecture (Corollary 4.3). Their experiments find that trained transformers also need roughly logarithmic depth in .
Realistic applications
A tight unconditional bound would show that multi-step retrieval and reasoning tasks force depth to grow with the number of steps unless width grows polynomially, informing how depth, width and chain-of-thought are traded in long-context models. It yields no faster model by itself, and the bounds are asymptotic, so practical design will still depend on benchmarks.
What counts as solved
A proof that every causally masked transformer with , and that computes has depth , or an explicit family of such transformers with depth . An unconditional depth lower bound, or an bound for a restricted model (hard attention, KV-cache-limited, or decoder-only with bounded heads), is partial progress.
How it gets verified
Expert reviewOnly expert review of the argument is possible today.
The claim is a circuit-style lower bound (depth Omega(log k) for causally masked transformers with the stated width and precision) or a matching construction. Making it checkable needs a formal transformer model and communication-complexity machinery that Mathlib lacks. Experts review the proof, and the constructive direction can be sanity-checked by running small instances.

Where the work is
A lower-bound proof in communication complexity; synthetic-task experiments only suggest conjectures.

Multi-party and autoregressive communication arguments (Chen–Peng–Wu) handle a constant number of layers and lose too much per layer to give depth growing with . Pointer-chasing round lower bounds are known for few-round protocols, but each attention layer is a highly parallel all-to-all round.
